The time for paranormal movies has yet again came and gone. We’ve had this, The Fourth Kind against Paranormal Activity. Who wins? Well…Paranormal Activity hands-down. This wasn’t even in the race. I started watching this with my mind wide open but this just didn’t work for me. Hundreds of people have been reported missing in a town in Alaska but have never been solved since the 60s. A psychologist named Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) starts researching sleep disorders when her patients all start to see white owls interrupting their sleep. When she hypnotises one of her patients, he starts to go crazy and leaves her office so he can kill his family and himself in the process. After hypnotising another patient, he starts to float in midair and speaks a different language. Soon, she realises that they have been abducted by aliens and that they aren’t the only ones who have, she has too.
Where do I start? The story is tragically weak even though the idea of the movie is quite a good one. The ‘real-life’’ clips add a nice touch to the scare factor to try and scare the audience yet fails to do so. It tries too hard to give you the ‘facts’ but goes back and forth from being a movie to a documentary and then a movie. The split-screens comparing the ‘real-life’ clip and the movie was a very good idea but ended up being overused to the point where it was just ridiculous. The acting from the cast was mediocre but Milla Jovovich was brilliant but even she couldn’t save this boring movie. Another thing that kind of got on my nerves was the phrase “What you believe is yours to decide!”, it was basically said about five times in the movie, that was a very minor bug in the movie and it annoyed me a little. If you’re very easily scared by alien abductions and the like, you might not like this movie much but if you want a proper scare, avoid like the plague!
Shame, it had everything to actually be a decent watch but failed to use it. If it wasn’t for Milla Jovovich, it would be a 1/10 from me.
