2010 has offered us quite a few action movies from Salt to The Expendables and yet again, Hollywood has given us another action movie that goes by the name of RED, which stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman. The movie is about retired CIA agents who know quite a few secrets about the CIA and the government which has made them assassination targets. Now Frank, Victoria, Marvin and Joe must work together one last time to break into the CIA headquarters and resolves things once and for all. There have been a few action movies that I have enjoyed watching, The Expendables being one of them with it’s great cast and it’s cool action scenes, but RED has the same to deliver and more. With a good solid cast, great acting, a cool story and, of course, slick special effects and stunts, RED is above any other action movie so far this year. Sure the CGI could have been a little bit better and yeah, it’s no Rambo or Die Hard but it’s still a worthy contender to action movies that are out and is a great addition to the genre. RED’s cast and the acting is brilliant as we see Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich in plenty of adrenaline-pumped action along with a few good scenes of dialogue. There’s also quite a few laughs in the movie too so if you’re not impressed by the action scenes (which would probably be unlikely), then the comedy part of the movie wouldn’t disappoint you. The characters were written very well and there was plenty of character development for most of the characters, however I would have liked to have seen a bit more of Helen Mirren as she was introduced in the movie a little late. The dialogue in the movie was great and there were a couple of scenes when it was truly well done but I felt that RED started to rush a little towards the end and when it got to the last five minutes of the movie, it slowed down a little. The action scenes and the stunts were brilliant and were very enjoyable and the special effects were well done, although there were a couple of times when it looked a little dodgy and cheap.

I don’t really have many problems with RED as it was quite an enjoyable watch. Although there are action movies out there that are much better than this, RED has definitely got more memorable scenes than other action-comedies like The A-Team or Knight and Day. The problems that I have with RED, except for Helen Mirren being introduced too late, is mainly about the pacing. I felt that it started off a little too slow at the beginning and started to drag, then the scenes started to go a little too fast when it came to the action and then it started to go slow again, this kept on happening a lot in the movie. I also felt that the ending was over in the blink of an eye and could have been a little longer than it was. Except for that, RED is definitely one for the action fans.

I enjoyed watching RED a lot and I think it’s definitely one of the best action-comedy movies since The Expendables. The entire cast of RED were brilliant and the crew have done a great job in making a great action movie. With action scenes you wouldn’t forget in a hurry and some great acting, writing and dialogue, I would recommend RED to anybody who loves a great action movie and likes a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure. This is definitely worth a watch in the cinemas.
