Nominated for nine Oscars, True Grit is one of those movies that is simply unforgettable because everything in the movie is near to perfection and deserves every bit of praise it gets and more. The story is about fourteen-year-old Mattie who hires Marshal Rooster Cogburn to help hunt down her father’s killer, Tom Chaney. First of all, it has to be said that Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfield both deserve to win an Oscar each for their brilliant and strong performances, especially the latter. Hailee Steinfield deserves a lot of recognition for her performance as Mattie and you can tell from the movie that she is a star-in-the-making and could have a bright future ahead of her. Jeff Bridges is also brilliant as Rooster Cogburn, the Marshall who helps the girl find her father’s killer and Matt Damon does a tremendous job as LaBoeuf, who joins the pair in finding Tom Chaney with an agenda of his own. From start to finish, True Grit had you captivated and kept you on the edge of your seat with it’s thrilling and suspenseful story and it’s memorable characters as well as it’s witty dialogue. The Coen brothers write this remake of the original John Wayne classic with the same name and they do such a marvellous job as they pay so much attention to every bit of detail in the movie.
Not only did the Coen brothers write True Grit but they also directed it and the direction was just brilliant. The look of the locations and the personality of the characters was fantastic and compelling and really added so much realism to the movie. It really drew you into the story and made you feel like you were there with them, hunting down this criminal. Every character had such powerful emotion and personality and they truly make such an impact on you that you cared about them. True Grit doesn’t only boast a cast full of very talented actors and actresses but it also shows that remakes can really work if they are in the right hands, the Coen brothers prove they are capable of making a remake of a classic and turning it into a stunning Western-revenge masterpiece.
This has to be one of the best drama-revenge movies I have ever seen and it has definitely impressed me a lot. Everything from the acting to the writing is just magnificent and if you’re one of those people that say remakes can never work, this will surely change your mind. I would recommend everybody to watch this as this will surely be at a high place on everybody’s top ten favourites, it’s definitely on mine.
