What would ET would be like if there were swearing, drug references and sex jokes in it? The answer to this is one word: Paul. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are back on top form since Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead with the new UFO comedy Paul. Paul is an alien who has escaped from Area 51 and asks for the help of two comic book geeks to help him get back to his spaceship before the government catch him. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are both simply brilliant as per usual when they work together and Seth Rogen is simply hilarious as Paul. The jokes and the endless sci-fi references are funny and they are used brilliantly. It was nice to see a couple of cameos in the movie as well as it added a nice unexpected twist to the story. It’s also nice to see that the same type of British humour seen in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz is also seen in Paul.

The special effects were absolutely fantastic and after a while, you saw Paul the alien as a person like Nick Frost or Simon Pegg and forgot he was CGI-created. Paul is directed brilliantly with a few laughs chucked in and some great character development, making you care about the characters. The script and the story were written very well with some good jokes, great dialogue between the characters and some cool twists to both the characters and the story. Paul is not only a funny movie but it is also one of the best laugh-out-loud comedies seen this year.

Does this beat Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz? Not so much, they admittedly work better with Edgar Wright, but it is a charming and funny comedy which answers the prayers of comic book geeks and sci-fi nerds everywhere with it’s non-stop references and answers the prayers of comedy lovers who want a good laugh. I personally loved the references and found it fun spotting quite a few of them. If you liked Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz or any other Pegg and Frost show or movie, you won’t be disappointed in Paul.
